Gender Equality

Gender equality is not only a fundamental human right, but a necessary foundation for a peaceful, prosperous and sustainable world. Although significant progress has been made over the last decades, many challenges remain.

In the light of this year’s International Women’s Day, this first conference organised jointly by ELSA Brussels, ELSA Münster and ELSA Nova Lisboa, top experts will come together to discuss Gender Equality as a Fundamental Right as well as Gender Equality in the times of the COVID-19 pandemic. The respective lectures will be followed by a brief discussion, as well as a Q&A session.

Anne Lagerwall is a renowned legal professional. After graduating with high honors in Public International Law from the Université libre de Bruxelles, Professor Lagerwall has obtained a PhD degree in judicial sciences from the same university. In addition to her activity as Professor at the Faculty of Law of the ULB, where she teaches „Public International Law“ as well as a course on the „Critical Approaches to Human and Women’s Rights“, Professor Lagerwall co-directs the Belgian Journal of International Law and directs the Centre for International Law of the ULB

Emellin de Oliveira is a researcher at the Research Centre on Law and Society (CEDIS) and a Ph.D. Candidate at the NOVA School of Law. She co-coordinates the Short Courses on Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Law at JURISNOVA/NOVA School of Law and she is the NOVA Refugee Clinic Executive Coordinator. She holds a master’s degree in International Migration from ISCTE-IUL, a post-graduation in International Relations – Studies of Peace and Security from the University of Coimbra and a Law Degree from the Federal University of Ceara. Until 2020, she was a Ph.D. Fellow of the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology and in 2019 she was a visiting researcher at the University of Pisa. Additionally, she is a member of the Portuguese and Brazilian Lawyer’s Bar Association, and she has assisted several organisations both in training and in legal advice on issues related to Immigration and Asylum Law. Her current research focuses on how security concerns shape Migration Law in the European Union.
